“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. ”

What Deb is Up to These Days?

What’s in Your Bucket (List)?

I have always wanted to go to Russia and this year my friend Nancy made it possible by including me as part of an American Delegation that spoke at the International Youth Forum, in beautiful Lake Seliger, Russia. I was part of an American team that trained 3000+ young people from over 80 countries. In my sessions we discussed Mass Media and Public Relations, other sessions included Global Politics, Civil and Social Development, Innovation and Enterprise with the world’s leading intellectuals, politicians, business people and opinion leaders.

My newsletters have been peppered with a few of my ‘bucket list’ side trips as I speak and travel around the world. I am forever grateful for the opportunities that have been given me. Dear reader may I venture and ask: “How about you?” What’s on your bucket list? Would you listen to an old friend’s suggestion? Get Going Now. The world is changing - so if you can, please go now to that place, city, state or country you’ve always wanted to visit. I learned long ago that I’ll probably have no more money tomorrow than I have today. So I had to stop waiting and get going and, friends, I’m glad I did. To look at the domes of St. Basils in Red Square is a breathtakingly beautiful dream come true. Many thanks to my friend Nancy Bocksor, www.nancybocskor.com, for making it possible.

Deb Sofield - 15 Rules for the Road™

13th Rule in my 15-part series

From my presentation called Deb’s 15 Rules for the Road

Rule Number Thirteen – Use Controlled Emotion

13. Use Controlled Emotion

If you are just trying to convey information, you could simply hand out a report. But successful speaking has some emotion and, in my line of work, I encourage using controlled emotion while you speak to get your point across. A great presentation might have humor, anger, a promise, or words of wisdom — and all of that can be harnessed for your success by using controlled emotion to reach the audience where they are and by speaking with power.

Think about it when your local news team reads the 6 o’clock news, you believe them – ever wonder why? Maybe you’re comfortable with them, maybe you know them, maybe your town is so small that you really do know all the news but, I would add it’s because of their training and their vocal rhythm and cadence that is comforting to your ears. Their use of controlled emotion captures the moment and thus you.

Most reporters don’t shout, they don’t speak in monotone, and they don’t frown. They don’t appear to be reading from a text or teleprompter. They talk to us – all 307 million of us – in the comfort of our homes or cars and we listen, as friends.

Speaker, you need to speak in a way that captures the rhythms and intonations of friends speaking to friends. By using controlled emotion you can capture the heart and minds of your audience.  Sometimes as a presenter you might need to show some, what I call, righteous indignation; asI am sure there are some things in this life that make you angry. As a speaker it’s okay to show flashes of frustration, anger or exhaustion with a given situation – but be careful – too much and your audience will think you’re a flake. No jumping on the couch like Tom Cruise did on the Oprah show or screaming like Howard Dean after he placed 3rd in the Iowa  (affectionately known as “I have Scream Speech”). Unhappy or not you must always keep a lid on the crazy. Controlled emotion means you’re in control—vibrantly!

In fencing, the riposte (French for "retort") is an offensive action with the intent of hitting one's opponent.

Deb's Soapbox

Exquisite Pain - A while back, I was in one of our fancy grocery stores in my town and I overhead a conversation between a couple on the aisle…the pretty lady at the far end of the aisle said to the other…“I don’t really mean this…but you don’t make enough money” whoa... I thought what an what an out-of-bounds comment in a grocery store no-less. How deeply angry, mean and unkind that pretty-on-the-outside woman was who was berating her friend. I can tell you this she is someone who is hanging on to her exquisite pain and her need to lash out and say something so mean-spirited showed her true self.

Tip of the Month

Don’t hang on to your “Exquisite Pain.”

You know the type of person I’m talking about, they won’t let go of an old hurt, an insult, or a 10-year-old break-up because years later it is all they have. Their “Exquisite Pain” gives them something to do, something to talk about, something to hold on to. Friends, learn to forgive and forget. By not letting go you are the one continually hurt by that action while the other person has probably moved on. The only way to have an amazing life is to put your burden down and leave it alone —walk away and don’t pick it up again. Today is the day and now is the time to let it go. My favorite quote - Get Over it and Stay Over it.
